Frequently asked questions

Is Dungeon Helper free?

Yes.

Why does Windows warn me about the installer?

The installer isn’t code-signed. A signing certificate is expensive, and Windows SmartScreen warns about any program without one. Click More info, then Run anyway. Plugins are a different matter: Dungeon Helper won’t load a plugin that hasn’t been authorized and signed. How that works.

Is using Dungeon Helper against DDO’s rules?

Dungeon Helper isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by Standing Stone Games or Daybreak Game Company, and we can’t offer legal advice or speak for them. Use it at your own risk.

Does it need administrator rights?

Usually not. Installing doesn’t, and neither does running it. The one exception is a DDO install under C:\Program Files: Windows asks for administrator approval when you press Deploy for it.

Do I have to keep the app open while I play?

No. Dungeon Helper runs inside the game. The app is only for setup, updates, plugins and AI tools.

How do I open Dungeon Helper in game?

Press the backtick key (`), or click the cog on the chalice toolbar. The key can be changed: see Hotkeys.

Are plugins toggled on per character?

Per account. Toggling a plugin on in game applies to the account you’re logged in to. The app’s Defaults & Settings section chooses the default for accounts that haven’t chosen. Many plugins keep their own settings per character.

Does it work when multi-boxing?

Yes. Every DDO client loads Dungeon Helper separately, and plugins are toggled on per account. Each account also keeps its own window positions, so arranging windows in one client doesn’t move them in another. Hotkeys only act on the client you’re playing in; the toolbar’s right-click menu works in any client. Plugins such as Awesome AutoFollow are built for it.

Does it work with Steam?

Steam installations of DDO are not tested. It might work and it might not. We make no promises and encourage you to use the standard installation if you are having problems with the Steam version.

Can I run Dungeon Helper 4 and Dungeon Helper 5 together?

No. They can’t run side by side. You can switch between them by redeploying the Companion DLL (dndpl.dll) from the one you want to use, but only one can be in a DDO install at a time. Their settings and save files are independent, so changes made in one don’t appear in the other.

Where are my settings stored?

In %LocalAppData%\DungeonHelperData. That folder is kept separate from the program, so updating or reinstalling Dungeon Helper doesn’t touch your plugins or settings.

Does Dungeon Helper collect data about me?

No. Dungeon Helper sends no usage data and nothing about your game. It connects to the internet only to check for updates to itself and your plugins, and to fetch the list of withdrawn plugin authorizations. If you use the AI tools, it also downloads the game-data set they use. Some plugins use online features of their own, explained on their pages. The one that sends game data is Collector: it’s optional, not included in the installer, and contributes what you see in dungeons to the community map data. See the privacy policy.

Can the AI tools see my character?

No. They answer from a database of DDO game data: items, quests, crafting and set bonuses. They can’t see your character, inventory or game. See AI tools.

How do I get a plugin that isn’t bundled?

Get its .zip from its author, then in the app go to Plugins → Install from zip. Dungeon Helper checks that it’s authorized before installing it.

How do I update?

For Dungeon Helper, close DDO and use Maintenance → Check for Updates → Apply Update & Restart. When an update includes a new in-game loader, the app replaces it by itself as it restarts. For plugins, use Plugins → Check for updates → Install.

How do I uninstall Dungeon Helper?

  1. Close DDO.
  2. Uninstall Dungeon Helper from Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Delete dndpl.dll from the x64 folder of each DDO install you deployed to, for example C:\Program Files (x86)\Standing Stone Games\Dungeons and Dragons Online\x64\dndpl.dll. DDO loads that file by itself, so it stays in the game until you delete it.
  4. Optionally, delete %LocalAppData%\DungeonHelperData to remove your plugins and settings too. Keep it if you might reinstall: Dungeon Helper picks up where you left off.

I’m writing a plugin. How do I get it authorized?

See For plugin authors.
