Troubleshooting
Start with the banner at the top of the Dungeon Helper app. It tells you when something needs doing and where to fix it. If you’re still stuck, ask on Discord.
Windows blocked the installer
“Windows protected your PC” appears because the installer isn’t code-signed. Click More info, then Run anyway. See Download & install.
Nothing appears in game
First check that DDO is using DirectX 10 or DirectX 11. Dungeon Helper shows nothing at all under DirectX 9 or OpenGL, and the app’s banner tells you when DDO is set to one of those. Switch DDO’s graphics to DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 in its options, then restart DDO.
Then check each of these. The first two are in the app’s Installation section:
Basic Installation should show a folder and a version. Press Test; it should say Dungeon Helper loaded and started successfully.
Companion DLL should say Up to date (or Newer, compatible) for the install you play. If it says Not installed or Update available, close DDO and press Deploy.
MSI Afterburner must not be running. While it is, Dungeon Helper shows nothing in game. Close it.
Then restart DDO.
If Dungeon Helper is loaded but you’ve hidden the toolbar, press Ctrl+Shift+B to bring it back, or the
backtick key (`) for settings. See Hotkeys.
“Dungeon Helper could not update dndpl.dll”
After an update, Dungeon Helper replaces the game’s loader by itself when it starts. It can’t while DDO is
running, or when DDO is under C:\Program Files. Close DDO, then press Deploy for that install in the
Installation section and approve the Windows prompt.
“Dungeon Helper is disabled” in game
The game’s loader (dndpl.dll) and your Dungeon Helper are versions that don’t work together. The message
says which one to update:
- "…needs a newer Dungeon Helper" or “Update Dungeon Helper”: update Dungeon Helper from the app’s Maintenance section. This happens when another Windows user on the PC has a newer Dungeon Helper.
- "…update dndpl.dll for this DDO install": close DDO, open the app’s Installation section and press Deploy for that install.
Dungeon Helper stays off for that session; DDO itself runs normally.
Deploy fails
- “Cannot deploy companion dll … close the game client first.” DDO has the file open. Close every DDO client and press Deploy again.
- "… the Windows prompt was declined." Your DDO install is under Program Files, so deploying needs administrator approval. Press Deploy again and say yes.
My DDO install isn’t listed
Dungeon Helper looks for DDO once, on its first start, using the standalone installer’s
records and any game that’s running. Under Add DDO Install Directory,
type the game’s main folder (the one containing x64, not x64 itself) and press Add.
My plugins aren’t on the toolbar
Plugins start out toggled off. In game, press the backtick key (`), open the Plugins tab and
flip the toggle. Toggles are per account, so each account you play needs its own.
A plugin says [NOT AUTHORIZED]
Dungeon Helper refused to load it, and the reason is printed underneath. Most often the plugin needs updating (Plugins → Check for updates in the app), or its author needs to publish a fixed version. Why plugins can be refused.
A plugin marked [MISSING] has been deleted from disk; press Remove from config to clear it.
An updated plugin still acts like the old version
A running game keeps the old version loaded. Toggle the plugin off and on in game, or restart DDO.
An update in the app is red, with no Install button
Dungeon Helper couldn’t verify that update, and the text says why. It will offer the update again once the plugin’s author fixes it. Your installed version keeps working.
“Dungeon Helper has updates ready, but a DDO client is running”
Close every DDO client, then reopen the app to finish updating. Afterwards, check Companion DLL and Deploy if it still says Update available.
“Dungeon Helper could not check for updates”
The update service couldn’t be reached, usually because you’re offline. Nothing is affected, and it tries again next time the app starts.
“Could not verify the published plugin revocation list”
Something on your network changed the download, as some hotel and office networks do. Nothing is blocked, and the list already on your PC stays in force. If it keeps happening on a network you trust, ask on Discord.
Can’t remove a plugin
“Close DDO before removing a plugin.” A running game keeps the plugin loaded. If DDO is closed and it still fails, another program has a file in that plugin’s folder open.
The game feels slower
In game, open Dungeon Helper’s settings and the Performance tab. It shows how long Dungeon Helper and each plugin take per frame, so you can see which one to toggle off.
My AI assistant can’t see Dungeon Helper
Restart the assistant after pressing Connect: tools only appear after a restart (or a reload, in VS Code). If the row says “Server not found — reinstall Dungeon Helper”, reinstall.
